I've since upgraded from that point all the way up to 10.11 without any issues (I did switch from Chimera to Clover at 10.10.3). at that point I built a desktop, cloned my Macbook drive to my new desktop's SSD, installed Chimera and boom I had my Macbook install turned into a hackintosh install. At that point I used HackerWayne's method to install 10.8 on my unsupported Macbook, which I ran until 10.8.2. I installed every point update until 10.7.5 without ever doing a fresh install. I personally started using Macs with 10.5.2 on my old white Macbook.
but just so others are aware, you can totally keep updating through versions of OS X without clean installs and might never have issues. This is a definitely good advice for most people.
